Web Banner Animation: Influences

For this assignment I decided to create a web banner to feature on my website. For this banner animation I have had some influences in terms of graphics, colours and theme. The theme I decided on was Fashion because it links in with the design of my website. Below I have summarised all of the elements of my web animation and have included influences from magazines, websites, adverts and objects.
Concept/ Advertising: For this web banner I have adapted the sophisticated black and white colour scheme incorporating a fashion model walking across the banner. As this appears the writing and information for the user will appear. The reason for this is because one of my interests is fashion, which links in with my website design. I also chose this because I am advertising etc Magazine, a local magazine in West Sussex. This is a magazine I have recently written for and fashion is a strong feature within the magazine. Therefore the catwalk model links in well and represents my personality and interest of mine.
Theme: I have decided to adapt and combine the themes of fashion and art deco. I chose these themes because I wanted to keep the web banner in a similar style to my website design. Therefore with the black and white theme, I think the banner looks in its place and links in well also reflecting my website itself. The fashion and art deco styles work well together and clearly advertise an interest of mine.
Graphics: The main graphics/ animation included in this banner is the fashion model walking across the banner. I originally wanted to draw the animation in Illustrator and create a fashion sketch inspired animation. I have had some influences for this graphic which I have discussed below under 'Influences'. The image below shows a similar style which I wanted to create for my animation.
Similar Style for Model Animation

Although, I decided to try and create the animation using stop motion photography. This allowed me to use my skills in Photoshop to edit them to create the intended effect. This has been featured on my current/ final web banner. This works really well within the banner and has created the effect.
Techniques: The main technique which I have used within the web banner is masking. Within Adobe Flash I wanted to use this technique to create a spotlight effect. Because of the fashion model concept, I believe the spotlight will look good and work well. This will be used as the model animation is seen walking across the banner to finally reveal the writing (information) including the company's logo.
Influences
Throughout creating my web banner I have had various influences for different elements. These include the theme and the use of graphics. Below I explain the influences I have had from different media texts.
Fashion Magazines: I have had influences from magazines for the graphics I intended on using in my web banner. This is related to the model animation which I wanted to create using original assets. I recently read Company Magazine and they have continuously used a fashion sketch to show the latest fashion trends. I liked the originality of this graphic and is the same style which I wanted to create for my animation. The image below shows this graphic from Company High Street Edit magazine.
Diet Coke Can: A recent Diet Coke can design by Benefit has influenced the design in terms of the colour scheme for my animation. This has also inspired and influenced the design of my website, therefore I wanted to link this design with my web banner. I liked the use of the black and white colour scheme and thought it reflected the black and white art deco/ retro theme which I wanted to portray in my banner. The image below shows the Diet Coke cans which have influenced the theme and design of my web banner.

Week 18: Logo Influences for ITV1 Logo

Influences of Typography from Existing TV Shows
I have also been influenced by existing logos for TV shows. These have influenced my own logo which have rebranded for ITV1 for my TV ident (s). These have influenced my logo for the theme of Christmas, below shows some of these influences and I have explained the reasons why they have influenced my logo.
Influence: The Talent Show Story Logo

This logo from a recent show which I watched ‘The Talent Show Story’ on ITV1 has influenced my rebranded ITV1 logo. The elements within this logo which influenced mine were the ‘Talent Show’ typography. The main text is very bold and inside the outline of the letters are gold dots, which is similar to the effect I have used for my logo. I have used the effect of lights and this effect is also used within this logo for the TV show. The gold within this logo also suggests the theme of Christmas; I made a similar logo in the gold colour scheme for my variation within my ident. Although this is not a Christmas logo it does reflect the theme in terms of the colour scheme and the star used within the centre.
Influence: Dancing on Ice Logo
This logo for Dancing on Ice has influenced my logo in terms of the sparkle element.  This recent logo caught my attention because of this element and that I am including this element strongly within my ident idea. This logo has been animated to show the sparkles around the edges. This to me reflects the theme of Christmas and has influenced my ident idea and also my logo. My logo will be seen lighting up and I will incorporate the stars sparkle around the edges, similar to this Dancing on Ice logo.

Week 17: Influences from TV shows

Over the Christmas period I had paid attention to graphics which have been included within various TV shows which I have viewed. These TV shows have included various animations similar to those which I will be including within my own ident (s). One TV show which caught my attention with the use of graphics was Deal or No Deal. Throughout the Christmas period in this show they used the graphics of lights on the box within the introduction sequence. This is a similar to the lights which I will be animating onto my filmed Christmas tree footage. These are multicolour lights which will catch the viewers attention and is an element which reflects the Christmas theme. I will be adding in the animated Christmas lights to the daytime footage which I have filmed. The reason for this is because I filmed the daytime footage recently and the tree did not have any lights, therefore I will animate the lights to add over the footage.
Deal or No Deal also used the sparkling lights graphics throughout the episodes. These were animated multicolour stars which were used before and after the advert breaks within this show. This animation covered the screen and the stars were seen scattering 'magically'. I will be including similar sparkling stars within my animation to surround the logo. This is because these are an element which strongly suggests the theme.

The Family Fortunes introduction sequence was also eye catching. This used graphics to emphasise the theme of Christmas. The use of the Christmas tree lighting up caught my attention. This is because it is similar to the concept of my ident, with the tree lighting up. I liked this introduction sequence as it clearly shows the Christmas theme with the Christmas lights and snowflakes and also stars.

Week 17: Influences for Final TV Ident

For my final TV Ident idea I have been influenced by recent products such as existing idents and TV adverts. In a previous post I briefly discussed these influences, but within this post I am talking in detail about how they have each influenced my final idea. Below I have highlighted these influences and how they have influenced my final ident idea. Within most of these influences listed below one element which is included within all of them is the use of the 'sparkles'. This is a main element which I wanted to include within my ident. The reason for this is because this the main iconography which I associate with the theme of Christmas and is an element I am included strongly within my ident.

Existing ITV1 Christmas Ident: For my research into similar and existing products one of the main idents which influenced my own ident idea was ITV1 Christmas Ident 2010. The reason why this influenced my idea so much was the graphics which are used within it. They have created the logo with the effect of sparkles. This use of graphics has inspired and influence my final idea. This also influenced the fact that my ident idea is based outside at night. The reason for this is because The Christmas lights can be clearly seen within a dark background. Therefore this is an element which I will include within my ident idea. This ident is shown below and the main element which I want to include to portray the theme of Christmas within my own ident is the use of the sparkle to create the actual ITV1 logo. I will be including this within my ident, this will be seen at the top of the Christmas tree surrounding my re branded ITV1 logo. This whole ident revolves around the use of graphics and animations which is also an element I am included a lot within my ident. This is because I am creating the baubles on the tree by using Flash animations and also the stars, sparkles and snow which are also featured within my ident.

Forrero Rocher TV Advert: Another media form which has influenced my ident in terms of the graphics such as sparkles is the Forrero Rocher Christmas TV advert 2011. This advert caught my attention when I saw it on many different TV channels over the Christmas period. The main element which interested me was the use of the sparkle trail taking the viewer on a journey to reveal the product being promoted, the chocolate. I intend on creating a similar gold sparkle trail from this advert within my own ident. I want this to spiral around the tree and appear around the logo at the top of the logo. I will create this animation within Adobe Flash and it want it to be a similar trail to the one shown within this advert.

Coca Cola Christmas Advert: The Coca Cola advert is also an iconic Christmas advert which has different elements which have influenced my ident idea. This ident focuses on the impact Coca Cola has and includes various elements such as lights, snow, stars and sparkle which reflect the theme of Christmas very well. One main influence which I have gained from this advert is the use of the lights lighting up as the Coca Cola truck travels along. This shows the impact the Coca Cola product has and how it has the 'power' to light up the Christmas lights has it travels. This is similar to an element which I want to include within my ident with the lights lighting up as the ident develops and the camera moves up the tree to reveal the ITV1 logo.

BBC1 Christmas Ident: Another existing ident which caught my attention over the Christmas period was the BBC1 ident. This again included various elements which showed strongly the theme of Christmas. All of the BBC1 idents include the signature 'O' within them, this ident included this in the form of a choir and the stars of the various shows on BBC1. The BBC1 logo then appeared over top of the blurred footage shape of the 'O'. Within this ident they have used different iconography for Christmas, similar to elements I plan to include within my ident. These are the snow, snowflakes and sparkle effects. The snowflakes are the main element which caught my attention, as these look very realistic and are similar to what I want to create for my ident. I will have the snowflakes falling from the top of the screen over the footage of the Christmas tree. I will also be able to create this animation within Flash and make the snowflakes as realistic as possible, like the snowflakes graphics within the BBC1 ident.

Moodboard Images- Another influence for my idea was in the creation of my moodboard. This presented my final idea in terms of the colour scheme, content and theme iconography. The main influence shown within this moodboard is the baubles with images inside them. This influenced part of my TV ident idea, as I decided to include animated baubles on the tree with footage of an ITV1 show from Christmas included within it. I believe this is a creative way of representing the shows on ITV1 at Christmas as people are always interested in the shows which are on TV at this time of year. Therefore by presenting it this way the viewer will pay attention to what is on TV through this ident. Also, when I create my suite of idents I can vary the archive footage which I include within the baubles to appeal to different audiences.

and also showing my Influences

Typography Influences: I have also created a new logo for ITV1 based on the theme of Christmas. I have had influences for this logo via different fonts and existing Christmas TV logos. The images below show some of these influences. I have created my own ITV1 logo with the use of the Christmas lights effect. I simply created the ITV1 text from two different layers of coloured Christmas tree lights. A similar effect can be seen within one of the images below. On a black background a green text has been created within the use of dots, which has the effects of sparkles which is similar to the effect my logo will have. I will animate my logo in Adobe Flash for my final ident as it will appear to light up letter by letter. The influences include the colours of red and green which are used within one of the images shown below. These two colours clearly represent and show a clear link to Christmas and people can therefore recognise this colour scheme.
Typography Styles which have Influence my Logo
I have shown clearly some of the influences from various media sources which have influence my final idea. By analysing these I have gained knowledge into what elements interest the audience and how I can ensure my ident will portray the theme of Christmas well.

In terms of my production, this week I have been completing my paperwork for filming. I have completed this and aim to film tomorrow (13th January) ready for the footage to be edited in Premiere Pro next week. Throughout this blog I am now reflecting on the different influences which have influenced my TV ident idea in terms of the different elements included.

Week 15: Production Documentation Continued

Throughout this week I have been completing the outstanding production documents. The documents which I have been completing are the shooting schedule, script, shooting script, risk assessment and call sheet. I have completed the shooting schedule, script and shooting script this week. I believe I have planned my time well throughout this production so far, I am currently behind on my production schedule, although I have worked in self-study time to ensure I complete the documents required. I have completed three of the remaining documents this week. The shooting schedule relates to the order in which I will shoot the ident, although, within my ident there is not much footage but I have still created a shooting schedule to show the shot sizes. The script and shooting script combine the shooting schedule, within the script I have written the visuals and sound with the narrator at the end of the ident. The shooting script takes elements such as the shot type and EXT or INT element and these are placed down the side of the script. Next week I will continue to complete the call sheet and risk assessment when I know the date of filming footage for my ident.

Also this week I have started to experiment with different animations which I will be including within my ident. These animations include: sparkle trail, stars, snow and falling snowflakes. I have started to create these animations which can be placed over the footage of the Christmas tree. These animations will look realistic such as the snow as these all suggest the theme of Christmas strongly. I have used both Photoshop and Adobe Flash to create these animations and I have used tutorials from YouTube to help me create the animations. Within Photoshop I have created a snow effect on one of my original images, I learnt this effect from an online tutorial. Next week I will also continue to experiment and create the different animations to be included within my TV ident.

Week 14: Production Documentation Started

Last week completed and submitted my investigation into TV idents. Through this investigation I gained a lot of new knowledge into the purpose and design of TV idents. The aim of the investigation was to research into the different elements surrounding TV idents and using examples discuss the purpose, design, creative communication and the opportunities of these TV idents. Through writing the investigation and analysing existing idents I have been able to gain knowledge and influences for my own TV ident. This investigation has therefore helped me with the planning of my initial and final idea for a TV ident.
Also this week I have been starting to complete my pre-production documents. The documents which I have currently completed are the initial ideas mind maps, developing ideas, proposal and initial aims. These are all documents which I need in order to present my initial ideas and the planning of my final idea. Within the proposal I have discussed and justified my final idea for my TV ident. I have also started completing some of the other production documents such as the filming documents. I have been keeping track on my production schedule and I am up to date with the tasks which should have been completed. This week I have completed the storyboards and a document showing influences from similar/ existing products. In terms of the storyboards I have created one main storyboard and I have also created storyboards for the animations which I will be including within my TV ident. These storyboards visually present what I intend my ident to look like with sound and camera shots information. I have created an influences document which shows various elements from existing idents and TV adverts which have influenced my final idea. The main element was the use of sparkles and glitter, this is an influence because I intend to use this within my ident to emphasise the theme of Christmas.

Responding to Peer Feedback: This week I also continued responding to feedback. I have been responding to the feedback from my peers from the pitch which I presented. I believe this went well and the improvements were positive and will make my idea even stronger. One of the main improvements was to experiment with different colours such as gold on the logo. I have done this, although I came across a problem when I knew the tree I was filming for the ident had a gold star at the top. Therefore the ident would blend in too much with the star and not be as visible as my red and green logo. Another improvement which I was given was the ability to film the footage. This could be an issue because I may not be able to film the tree in January because Christmas is over. Therefore I did decide that I could have a backup plan of filming the tree with my own camera over the Christmas holidays. By filming it at this time it ensures me that I will have some footage to work with to create my TV ident.
I will continue to complete my production documentations including the script, shooting script, risk assessment, shooting schedule and call sheet. These are the documents which I will need to plan and create my TV ident.

Week 12 & 13: Pitch and Feedback & Investigation into TV Idents

Last week I presented my final idea to 3 of my peers in the form of a pitch. Within this pitch I presented my final idea and I was given feedback from my peers about different elements within my idea which they believe I could improve. I was happy with my pitch as I created a PowerPoint which showed the relevant information regarding my final idea. The elements which I included within my pitch include: Content, Theme, Colour Scheme, Logo, Typography, Existing/ Similar Products, Example of my Idea and Target Audience. Within my previous post I stated that my final idea was ITV1 at Christmas. This is the idea which I discussed within my pitch. The feedback which I gained from my pitch was good. I was happy with the way my peers reacted to my idea. They did give me some improvements which I could make to my idea to improve it. These improvements include:
  • Experiment with other colours for my ITV1 logo (gold)
  • Consider issues which could arise in terms of filming the footage: this is an element I need to consider, as my idea is based on a Christmas tree, therefore I will need to film this within the Christmas period.
I have considered these two elements and I will respond to these within the pre-production and production stage of this assignment. These improvements I believe will help me when I create my ident. I am glad I have had some feedback on my idea and have also gained feedback from the potential target audience of my ident.

Investigation
Over the past two weeks I have been continuing with my investigation into TV idents. Through the process of completing this investigation I have learnt a lot about the purpose, design, opportunities, Limitations and communication of TV idents. Within the investigation I have stated these different elements in relation to TV idents. I have analysed existing TV idents in relation to the different elements, this allowed me to understand and show my understand of how the purpose, design, communication and opportunities TV idents have. Some of this knowledge includes:
Design
Density of Information: This relates to the amount of information included within the ident. This usually relates to the voice over informing the viewer of what is coming next on the channel. The information ranges from the voice over simply stating the programme name to giving a synopsis.
Screen Tempo: The screen tempo relates to the speed of the ident. These are usually a slow pace as they allow a relaxing break in between programmes. The speed of the idents does depend on the channel and the target audience. For example, ITV2 idents are have a faster tempo than those on ITV1. This is because the target audience is different.
Space and Time: This relates to how well the space on screen is used and the duration of the idents. This varies between each channel, for example, Channel 4 idents use the screen space very well. This is because they create an illusion of the '4' using a landscape which covers the whole screen.

Purpose
Identity: The identity is important for the channel. Through the use on idents on their TV channels the channel itself is creating more of an identity. People will recognise the channel by its ident in terms of the format of the ident.
Scheduling- Idents can be seen as adverts and breaks within TV programmes, especially within channels such as BBC.
Segmentation within scheduling: This allows the programmes to be ‘broken up’ and show that one programme has finished and they are now introducing another.
Opportunities
Brand loyalty: Faithfulness of consumers of a particular TV channel in terms of viewing figures- competing channels. Tight scheduling with programmes appealing to a particular audience.
Creation of corporate identity: Channels colour schemes, designs make a visual statement about channel itself which represents how the company views itself.
Limitations
Typography: Appeal to the target audience and meaning of typeface
Colour palette: The appearance of the colours could change when the ident is viewed on different devices such as computer, TV and mobile.

Time Management
Throughout the process of this project so far I have been using my production schedule to complete my production documentations by the deadlines I have set myself. I am on schedule in terms of the the production documents I have completed. The only document which is incomplete and should have been completed by today is my Proposal. I will aim to complete this document tomorrow as I have all the relevant information I need to complete this. The proposal is similar to my pitch and allows me to justify my final idea. A deadlines which I have this week is my investigation into TV idents. This is a deadline which I will meet and I have been given set deadlines like this throughout this assignment. This includes the pre-production documents deadline and the final deadline. I have stated these deadlines within my production schedule. By having these certain deadlines it allows me to plan and schedule when I will complete certain tasks and gives me a clear time frame. Overall, in terms of my time management I believe I have completed the relevant documents according to my production schedule.

This week I will complete my investigation and my proposal. I will also continue with improvements from previous Film Studies work and start responding to feedback for my final idea.
